Airport

To reach Negril, the best option is Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, the closest major airport. From there, book a car or shuttle for the scenic 1.5 to 2-hour drive to Negril.

Time Zone

Jamaica operates on Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5). No daylight savings, so you’ll enjoy those beautiful sunsets at a consistent hour.

Currency

The Jamaican Dollar (JMD) is the official currency, though USD is widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs are available, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for local shops.

Banks

Both banks offer currency exchange services. To avoid long lines, it's advisable to arrive early, as queues tend to form shortly after opening.

Cambios

Cambios are licensed currency exchange facilities that often provide competitive rates and quicker service compared to banks. In Negril, notable cambios include.

  • Time & Trend: Located across the beach road from Time Square Shopping Centre.

  • FX Trader: One branch is situated in Kings Plaza.

  • Gold Nugget Cambio: Located right beside the Scotiabank in town.

These cambios offer quick currency exchange without bank wait times.

  • Operating Hours: Cambios generally have more flexible hours than banks.

  • Identification: Bring a valid ID when exchanging money, as it's often required.

  • Rates: Exchange rates can vary between banks and cambios.

Language

English is the official language, with Patois (Jamaican Creole) spoken widely—adding a bit of local flair to your stay!

Medical Services

For peace of mind, Omega Medical Hospital is located right on Seven Mile Beach for any medical needs that may arise.

Visa Requirements

Most travelers from Commonwealth countries, the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. do not need a visa for short visits. Check specific requirements for your country to be sure.

Electricity

Jamaica uses Type A and Type B outlets, just like in the U.S., and runs on 110 volts/50 cycles. Some hotels offer 220-volt outlets—pack a universal travel adapter and surge protector to protect your devices.

Staying Connected

SIM Cards from Digicel or Flow are available at Sangster International Airport to keep you connected during your trip. Look for their kiosks upon arrival.

Car Rentals

If you want the freedom to explore, car rentals are available right at Sangster International Airport. Keep in mind, you can rent a car or motorcycle locally, though rentals are generally from local providers rather than big-name companies.

Local Taxi

In Negril, route taxis with Red license plates are the most affordable way to get around. For each trip, a set fee is paid by each person.

Taxis are ride sharing vehicles which means additional passengers may be picked up on the way to your destination until they are full. Each route costs around $150 JMD per person.

There’s also the option to charter a private, Red license plates for added convenience, though this typically comes with a higher price.
